Industrial & Applied Mathematics - TU Eindhoven

What am I learning in Industrial & Applied Mathematics (IAM) in TU Eindhoven now ?
I am one of the students who got ASML scholarship in 2007. My specialization in IAM is Statistics, Probability and Operation Reserach. Let's have a look some courses in IAM, not only in my specialization but also another specialization.

There are three specialization in IAM which are Statistics Probability & Operation Research (SPOR), Discrete Mathematics & Applications (DMA) and Computational Science & Engineering (CSE).

In SPOR, we will learn many courses related to stochastics procesess, queueing system, integer programming, random graph and nonparametric statistics. In DMA, we will learn about coding & crypto, cryptographic protocol, liniar and bilinear algebra, graph and algorithm. The last one is CSE where we can learn courses related to scientific computing, partial differential equation, continuum mechanics. numerical programming and applied function analysis.

Besides those compulsory courses, students can also choose the elective courses such as applied statistics, optimization, stochastic differential equation, advanced modelling, system & control, stochastic decision theory, design experiment and any other interesting courses.

Most of the master project for IAM students will be taken place in company during the last 7-8 months of the study. Most of the students will be paid 300-500 euros per month during that period.

Another advantage you can get if you apply to this major is that there is an opportunity you will be granted ASML or Oce scholarship which consist of 2-year scholarship and 3-year working in high-tech job in their company. Is that interesting, isn't it ? :D

At glance : Erasmus Mundus - ESIM

In this chance, I would like to share the information about the scholarship which many mathematics students can consider to apply. It's called ESIM, European School for Industrial Mathematics. This is join 2-year Master programs of three highly qualified universities in Europe. Actually this scholarship is not required many aspects which makes me recommend all student of Mathematics who are interested in Applied Mathematics to apply to. The requirements are
  • Your background in BSc should be applied mathematics with GPA at least 75% or 3.00 from 4.00
  • Your TOEFL should be at least 550 (PBT) or 213 (CBT) or 80 (iBT) or equivalent with 6.0 for IELST
Once you get this scholarship, I can say that you are rich because the granted money for the living expenses given from the scholarship are far more than enough compare to the actual living expenses you will spend. It means that you would have savings after you graduate :D
The calculation :
  1. scholarship (+) 42.000 euros for 2 years.
  2. tuition fee = 5655 euros x 2 years = 11.310 euros
  3. living expenses= (-) 600 euros x 24 months = 14400 euros
  4. other cost (resident permit, visa, insurance) =5000 euros
  5. flight tickets = 1200 euros ( example : Indonesia - Europe)
At least you can get 10.000 euros after 2 years. Bring back to your country :D
(For Indonesian, it's the same as you earn money around 6 million rupiahs per month while studying in Europe!!!)

When you apply this scholarship, you have to choose 2 of 3 the universities where you want to study in. Those are TU/e (Netherlands), Kaiserslautern (Germany) and Linz (Austria). Every year this scholarship will be closed on 1st of February.

Be prepared Mathematics students !!! Now is August 2008.
You still have time 6 months to apply for 1st Feb 2009 !!!!!

Follow the link below for the details.

Lucky or Unlucky ?? (Part II)

Continue from the previous part..

As I mentioned before that the third experience was related to eveything happened in Netherlands. Someone has guessed what it was. I think he is definitely right :D
There is a boy and there is a girl. Girls can make boys life more colorful. The first time I left Indonesia, I felt unlucky because I had to leave someone that I really loved so much. I approached her intensively almost 11 months. I felt unlucky cause I couldn't be together with her. I could be at least 5 years the time that I would spend in Netherlands. As predicted most of my friends, our relationship is over. She couldn't make it anymore. She needs someone who can always be close with her. I cannot do it :( Finally, we broke up.. But...

Someone special comes to me. Someone who is really care about me. Someone who really really loves me ( she said so :D ) Eventhough we come from "different world", we will try our best to be together because Love conquers everything ( I hope so :D )..
I am LUCKY, so far :D

Success in everything

Every person has his own principle to be a success. But I have a special principle which I think most of people might agree. Once upon time in past :D, my teacher in senior high school taught me tips to be a success. He taught a simple word, DUIT. DUIT is the key of success. Don't you think that everybody needs DUIT ? Noone will say "no". Here the following is what DUIT means.

"D" stands for Doa = pray. If you want something, you had better pray first so that hopefully you can get everything you want. If you know the power of pray, you will never ever forget to pray everyday, every hour and every minute.

"U" stands for Usaha= effort. Can you imagine that if you only sit at home and pray to the GOD asking something, for example you want to obtain a high score in exam ? Do you think you wish can happen ? Of course not !!! You need some efforts to achive your goal, to get what you wish. You need to think every essential things that support you to achieve it. For the last example, of course you have to study hard.

"I" stands for Iman=faith. While praying and doing the efforts, you should put in your mind that you will attain success. The main different most of people that they don't have faith to be a success. If ones don't have a faith to the God, it could turn out a suicide when they fail many times. Don't leave you God when you fail because God will never ever leave you in your sadness and your happiness. Believe it !!

"T" stands for Taqwa=piety. This is kind of righteousness or morality. This kind of thing distinguish "good" person and "bad" person. The piety is related to the way you do the efforts. Your efforts could be "right" efforts and could be "wrong" efforts. Every religion states which effort is right or wrong. In the last example it's obvious that the right effort is study hard and the wrong effort is that you cheat during the exam (jangan nyontek oi !!! ) :D

Eventhough It has been a long time since that teacher taught me this principle, but I can still remember it all and it has become my principle for last 10 years. And it will still be my principle forever and a day...

Lucky or Unlucky ??

Sometimes you might feel that you were borned as an unlucky person. Is that true or do you believe that ? For me myself, I admit that at some points in my life sometimes that I feel that I am unlucky person. But now, I have realized that everything behind it has another side that brings you to luckiness.

First experience is when I was in senior high school. Before I graduated from senior high school, I had already decided that I wanted to choose IF ITB as the first choice of my higher education. Unluckily, I was rejected for my first choice in UMPTN and I was admitted for the second choice which was mathematics. I remember that the day of the announment I was travelling by bus to Bandung and when I heard this news from my father, I was really disapointed. Eventhough I was admitted by ITB and my family was really happy, but I could not been happy at all. I just kept silent along the journey to Bandung. I was thinking that if I had been admitted for my first choice, I would have been more enthusiastic to study far from home. During the first 2 years in ITB, I was still thinking to change the major to Informatika. I was really suffering to study what was not my first choice. Eventhough my grade in mathematics was not really good, I could still get IPK 3.3 for the first 4 semesters ( because I am good at mathematics :D ). The small hope came up when the curriculum in mathematics was changed. There was a new sub major in Mathematics department called Financial Mathematics. I was really happy since the courses seemed suitable for me. The excitement brought me to achieve better grade and I chose this submajor and eventually I gradutated with IPK 3.57 cumlaude. Not only that, but also 2 months before I gradutated I was already hired by ABN AMRO Asset Management because of my submajor, Financial Mathematics. I feel so lucky since most of students even after their graduation they are difficult to find a job. Am I lucky or unlucky ?

The second experience is the continuation of the first one. Actually before being hired by ABN AMRO, I wanted to continue my study to Singapore, NTU but I decided to keep it. After 2 months working in ABN AMRO, unluckily, something happened !!! I fell sick and it needed around 1 year to be cured 100%. I was really really stress and once again I fell that I was unlucky person. It was the worst period in my life. After being healthy, I decided to continue my study to Singapore. But what happened ? I was rejected by NTU, because I didn't have enough working experience eventhough I graduated cumlaude from ITB. It took almost 1 year for me to apply to universities and scholarships from around the world. I was admitted by UWA, Monash, UNSW (Australia) but I did't get any scholarships. I was also admitted by Zurich university in Switzerland but no scholarship either. At last I applied to Uva, TU Eindhoven ( Netherlands), Ulm and Kaiserslauterns (Germany). I was still unlucky, I only got partial scholarship in UVa, Ulm, Kaiserslautern. The lucky month in my life is July 2007. TU Eindhoven offered me ASML scholarship. This scholarship consists of 2 years study in TU EIndhoven and 3 years working in high tech job in ASML which is one of the big company in the Netherlands. I didn't think twice, I accepted the offer and went to Netherlands. As soon as I arrived in Netherlands, Paris University ,collaborate with Erasmus Mundus, offered me another full scholarship, Erasmus Mundus scholarship fo study 2 years in France, Germany and Italy. And they asked me to come to Paris in 1 week after that offer. Eventhough the last offer seemed more interesteing, but I had already been in Netherlands. Another advantage choosing ASML scholarship is that I don't need to find a job any more after graduation. After thinking for 1 day and I decided not to accept this offer and continued everyhing in Netherlands. Now, I am still studying in Netherlands in second year and I feel so lucky eventhough I had to get through a long suffering 2 years after I graduated from ITB. Am I lucky or unlucky ?

The third experience is still secret and it's related to everything happened in Netherlands :D.
To be continued...

Behind the scene !!

What do people think about you ? Do you think that what they think about you is true ? Do you think that everything they look at you from outside is really you ? Let's see the truth about me that one group of my friends know but other groups of my friends don't know.

The first thing is that grant always studies so that he always gets a good grade/score. The answer is wrong !!! I only study when it is necessary. If you don't understand something in the class, you should study at home so that you can do the exams and the assignments well. Sometimes, if the courses that I am following are interesting, I will study more :D

The second thing is that grant is a deligent student. This is absolutely wrong !!! Since I was in bachelor degree, I seldom attend the class. I maximized the chance to be absent. If you can learn by yourself, why you have to attend the class ? One time when I was in the fourth year of bachelor in ITB, I was looked for by the lecturer because I seldom attent. Luckily, I could still get a good score :D

The third thing is that I am always happy. It's true sometimes but also wrong sometimes. It depends on my mood. The worst thing is that one time I look so kind with someone, but actually it's not at all !!! Once you hurt me, I will remember it eventhough I say to you that I already forget it. But the best thing is that I only remember it but I will not bring it up if I have a new problem with you.

The fourth thing is that I am an indifferent person. The truth is that I am a sensitive person !!! From outside seems that I don't care you, I don't care every single word you say to me, but in my heart I will always remember every good and every bad words you say to me.

The last thing that I don't like most is that don't mock or disrespect your friend something that is a truth and unchangeable. If you have a friend who is stupid (really stupid, cannot be helped anymore :D ), don't mock him/her stupid, because they are not able to change it. If you have a friend who is ugly ( again, really really ugly), so don't mock/disrespect him/her, because it's them since they were borned. The worst thing is that if you have disable friends, never and ever mock/disrespect them otherwise I will curse you !!! Appreciate all your friends like the way they are. I love you all, my friends (I almost cried when I was saying this last sentence hahahahha :D )....

Scholarship (General)

Hi friends

This is my first blog on the internet. In my first blog, I would like to share my experience about what I did so that I got the scholarship to Netherlands. So many people asked me about this matter, but I just told them that I used the internet to find that scholarship. In this opportunity, I would like to give you a brief explanation about the scholarships, especially master degree scholarships.

The most powerful source to get the information about the scholarships is internet. One can use search engines such as google the famous one or others, on the internet to find all the information about schools, colleges, universities all over the world. Internet is an unlimited source of information. If we can maximize the use of this device, we will get any information we want to know.

KEY WORD
The first important thing that we have to know to find such information is the key words. If we want to find some information on the internet using search engines, we have to know the "key word". A suitable "key word" will make the information exploration more efficient and effective. For example, for someone who does not know the top universities in the world can use "top university" or "best university" as a keyword. Besides that, we can also use the keyword "rank university 2007". Another example. if we want to find the scholarships, we can use "scholarship for master student" or "research scholarship". You can try to use it as many as we want to find the information about universities or scholarships. Don't hesitate to use any keywords using google, just type it and see the results. If you don't find the information what you want, just change another key word.

The second important thing to know the information about the scholarship is by registering to scholarship group such as yahoo group for scholarship or milis beasiswa (for indonesia people). From these, you can get up to date information about the scholarships, and how to get the detail information about that as well as how to apply it.

Another way to get the information about the scholarships is from your university. You can get this kind information from your university whether from the International Office, your professors, your friends or banners and brochures. Don't hesitate to ask about the opportunities to get the scholarship to others. Ask as many as questions about the scholarships, the more information you get the bigger opportunity you will get.

The last thing that you have to remember and you have to ask to yourselft that weather or not you are qualified to receive the scholarship or financial assistance. It is very obvious indeed you should have a good qualification to get the scholarship. Each scholarships has different requirements but at least the first two things that you should be good at are your academic skill and your languange skill. These two things are the basic requirements that you should have to be nominated to get the scholarship. Basically, most organizations who provide the scholarship might ask you to have these things below:
1. Academic skill
It's a very good thing if you have a good academic skill, i.e. high GPA score. If you graduate from a good university and you have a GPA score, I suggest you to consider finding the scholarship in case that you want to continue your education instead of finding job.
2.Language Skill
The next aspect is language skill. The common language used in Master degree is English. Having a high score in TOEFL or IELST will enhance you chance to be admitted by the university. Most of universities require the student to have at least 580 for PBT-TOEFL or 92 for iBT-TOEFL or 237 for CBT TOEFL or 6.5 for IELST.'
3. Recommendation Letter
Having a recommendation letter from a famous professor will be a great advantage. If the professor from the university you apply have known you, it will be easier for you to be admitted by the university. And even it's not impossible that you will get the scholarship.

After you have these three things, hopefully you can be admitted by the university and get the scholarship. Good luck friends.
